On Thursday evening, I was talking to a dealer at Art Basel who, despite being on his third day of sitting in his booth, was feeling positively buoyant about the whole experience. Interesting people had been coming through, there was great art on offer at the fair, and beyond the Messeplatz, there was even more to see at museums and galleries. Basel during art fair week is a paradise of ambitious exhibitions. At the Kunstmuseum, there is a stunning survey of paintings from 1967 to 1973 by the great Sam Gilliam that is nothing short of masterful—pretty much every work is a stunner. Now curators in the United States need to put together a full-on Gilliam retrospective and send it on a wide tour of the country. But that is not all at the Kunstmuseum’s locations. They also offer shows of work by Maria Lassnig, Theaster Gates, and a two woman show of Hito Steyerl and Martha Rosler…
